World Humanitarian Day | 19th August
Today we honor World Humanitarian Day.
Each year on August 19, we recognize aid workers who put their lives at risk to better the lives of others. We also rally support for people around the world affected by crises. #WorldHumanitarianDay
Why the day matters
Humanitarians provide life-saving assistance in the middle of war, conflict, famine, and natural disasters. They help meet basic needs: food, shelter, clothing, and safety.
An estimated 130 million people worldwide live in crisis and need humanitarian aid.
Since 2008, more than 700 humanitarian workers have lost their lives or faced dangerous situations in the line of duty. Their service is selfless and vital.
How to observe
You don’t need to be famous or travel far to make a difference.
5 simple ways to support today:
1. Volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen
2. Donate personal belongings to someone in need
3. Contribute to a relief organization
4. Do a random act of kindness for a stranger
5. Share your support with #WorldHumanitarianDay
A quick history
The UN General Assembly established World Humanitarian Day in 2008. It was first observed on August 19, 2009, six years after the 2002 Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad that killed 22 people, including the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Each year has a new theme focused on the work of humanitarian workers and people in crisis.
Today we thank the humanitarians, and the organizations like the UN, NGOs, and local groups, who show up when it matters most.
